TRITON Rebreather MCCR Chest Mounted Oxygen
Meet the Triton Rebreather. A Chestmounted Mechanically Controlled Closed Circuit rebreather, MCCR. It is produced by M3S. A company based in France, where it has been tested in the vast cave systems there. It is the first MCCR to receive CE ratings all the way to a depth of 100 meter when used with Trimix.
The little difference
So what makes the Triton Rebreather different than most other units out there?
As one of the smallest, commercially produced Closed Circuit Rebreathers on the market, the M3S TRITON MCCR weigh only 7 kg (15lbs) when ready to fly (without tank or lime) and 12,5 kg (27lbs) when ready to dive.
Besides that it is designed to be easy and light to travel with. It is also designed to be easy and flexible to work with. All connections are made in POM-C or Acetal. This is an extremely strong and durable engineered plastic. And it has been color coded and work with a click lock system. This means it is nearly impossible to connect it up wrongly.
The unit itself consist of a Kevlar bag containing the 2 breathing lungs, a 2.3 kg scrubber canister and a removable chamber holding 3 Oxygen cells connected to the Monox (oxygen monitor) and HUD. Optionally either a Divesoft Freedom computer or a Shearwater computer can also get connected to the unit. The breathing hoses are made in transparent blue silicone and the Diver Supply Valve (DSV) is designed very light and with a clip-on retainer for the HUD.
The ADV (Automatic Diluent Valve) clips in on the left hand side and is supplied by off board diluent tank. The ADV is also connected to the Oxygen supply system that attaches on the right hand side. The Oxygen feed is through a Constant Flow orifice and manual inflation. The 1.5L Oxygen tank straps to the bottom of the bag.
Triton MCCR configuration options
The Triton MCCR is a Chest Mounted Oxygen Rebreather and it can be combined with any configuration you choose. This means you could combine it with single tank backmount in normal recreational configuration, with a twinset or what most people do –with sidemount configuration. It is really up to you and what standard configuration you normally prefer. The Triton can also be combined with another Closed Circuit Rebreather as either the primary or as a bail-out CCR.
The adaptability and size of the Triton opens the access to a lot of different types of dives. So whether we are talking restricted areas in caves or wrecks where the more classic units can’t easily go, or extreme depth –the M3S Triton is a natural choice.
Here at Blue Label Diving in Thailand, we have been using the Triton MCCR as a separate Bail Out Rebreather during extreme cave dives to depths of 200 meter. To connect nearby caves with each other by being able to pass through restriction areas. And naturally to do some amazing dives around our local divesites.
How to get certified
If you are already a certified CCR diver all you need to do is a 3-day crossover to the Triton. Day one is unit familiarization and a confined water workshop. On this day the focus is on the skills and drills that are a bit different compared to other CCR units. Day 2 is a couple of dives in open water using the unit and practicing the safety drills.
